Oh! Man (2004) Yervant Gianikian, Angela Ricci Lucchi, Benito Mussolini-poster
This analytically organized compilation of archival footage is nothing less than a horror documentary. The images, which show destitute Austrian children in 1918, dead Russian children in 1920, the mutilated faces and shattered bodies of veterans of the First World War, Mussolini rising to power, and his army invading Ethiopia in the nineteen-thirties, are almost unbearable to see. Though the devastations of war are painfully individualized, its violence is left generic: whether the work of artillery shells or land mines, machine guns or bayonets, the destruction of the body is presented as the woeful lot of mankind itself. The filmmakers, Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi, who are based in Italy, reverse the chronological order of events, putting the Fascist-era material up front and printing it as negative, in order to bring to life a profoundly disturbing idea: the appalling casualties of today are born of the political monstrosities of tomorrow.
