Horace Jenkins’ Cane River is a racially themed love story shot in Natchitoches Parish, a “free community of color” in Louisiana. A budding romance lays bare the tensions between light-skinned, property-owning Creoles and the more disenfranchised, darker-skinned families descended from slaves. Though championed by Richard Pryor, Cane River disappeared for decades after Jenkins’ sudden death at 42, shortly after the film’s extremely limited release.
